Growing Indigenous Teacher Education Through Self-Determination and Indigenous Knowledge: Perspectives from Indigenous Institutes in Ontario

In 2023, Medow Consulting supported the Indigenous Institutes Consortium to develop a short report on the critical work done by Indigenous Institutes in Ontario to support Indigenous learners to become credentialed teachers. This report, called Growing Indigenous Teacher Education Through Self-Determination and Indigenous Knowledge: Perspectives from Indigenous Institutes in Ontario explores how Indigenous Institutes in Ontario - as the third pillar of post-secondary education in this province - play a unique role in supporting Indigenous learners to become credentialed teachers. They help recruit, retain and train teachers through Indigenous Teacher Education Programs currently delivered in partnership with mainstream universities and they support professional development in Indigenous learning for credentialed teachers through Additional Qualification offerings. Through strong community grounding and a pathbreaking provincial legislative framework recognizing their role, Indigenous Institutes are uniquely positioned to expand delivery of Indigenous teacher education through self-determined Indigenous-led post-secondary education and training.
